A Community Centre plays a crucial part in uniting the local people. However, without the right care and attention over the years they can lose their attraction and become an eye sore within the community.
While there are ‘easy fixes’ for bringing a community centre more up-to-date, every decade or so, a refurbishment is the best way to maximum the use of the centre and allow it to have the most positive impact.
Community buildings and centres have long been a part of our society. They have an incredibly important role in bringing people together and providing support, activities and comfort to those who live nearby.
However, these buildings are often taken for granted. Overtime they become tired looking and no longer fit to serve the community in the way that it needs.
Community centres give local people a chance to get out, socialise and have access to activities or hobbies they may not normally be able to afford or travel to. To provide these provisions the community centre requires volunteers. This is another great opportunity for local people to get involved with volunteering, learning new skills and gaining valuable experience.
The centres also play a critical role in carrying out community projects. This can include fundraising for local charities or the community itself. Another way they benefit the community is by arranging projects like clean ups throughout the local area.
For young people in particular a community centre provides a safe place where they can engage with other young people with the supervision of adults. As well as being able to access activities and potentially a support network. This helps reduce anti-social behaviour and criminal activities amongst younger people.
Community centres are a great hub for information, often helping those who are looking for work, connecting local businesses with customers or promoting local events and clubs.
A large number of community centres have been around for many years and are often home to the same interior as when they were first established.
It’s fairly common for a community centre to become outdated and serve more as an eye sore than an asset to its local community. That is why a refurbishment can be the difference between a centre that attracts negative attention and one that provides all the positive impacts we mentioned above.
We understand that a full refurbishment project may not be possible initially, however there are some easy changes that will make a big impact.
You don’t need to hire an expensive company to paint, you can ask for volunteers or perhaps a local company would be happy to help at a reduced fee for free advertisement at the centre. Depending on the size of the centre, it also shouldn’t take too long but you’ll be surprised how much of a difference fresh paint makes!
The chairs may be the original and can be expensive to replace, however, a simple recover could transform them! Again, local seamstress or upholstery companies may be able to provide the fabric for free – especially if they are offcuts!
This may be something that is already done but if not, we highly recommend having the carpets professionally cleaned! It is a super cost-effective way to brighten up the space and breath new life into the centre.
Are you making the most of lighting at your community centre? While you can go down the more costly route of having an electrician install lighting, a much more affordable way to improve this is by accessing natural light. Check you don’t have large curtains or blinds that are obstructing windows and increase this feeling of light by adding in cleverly positioned mirrors to reflect the natural light.
